On Oct. 1, Stephanie Webb of the Edison Sailing Center in North Fort Myers announced that their annual River Romp – a US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival – was canceled due to the extreme red tide conditions on Florida’ southwest coast. Here is the message Webb sent out:
Ahoy to the Region!
Although a hurricane could not deter us from hosting River Romp last year, the water has “turned the tide”. For the first time in the 23 years we have hosted this JO, due to parent input from multiple sailing organizations and YCs, the Board of Directors and Regatta Volunteers sadly announce the cancellation of River Romp this year.
Despite some registration issues that we had been trying to address – and all of which were on my end, the overwhelming response from families was that they had decided not to attend because of continuing concern about the water quality.
ESC will be taking the time it would have devoted to final preparations for the regatta to begin posting factual information about the environment and water quality on our website.
So we have some happy HS420 sailors of our own who can now sail in Jensen Beach instead of staying here on the 20th, and I cannot begin to thank so many parents who took the time to graciously respond to my email and express their concerns in a collegial and helpful manner.
Best wishes to everyone – let’s go sailing!
